If you’ve ever undertaken a big project (like a dissertation or a GRC talk), you’ll know that trying to thank everyone who supported you along the way is no small task. It’s a tall order—but one that’s more than worth the effort.
First, I want to express my deep appreciation to my colleagues and students at the University of Virginia (UVA), who placed their trust in me to organize and lead several 3MT competitions. It was through this role that I had the privilege of witnessing, up close, what makes a research talk truly unforgettable. I’m especially grateful to the hundreds of UVA PhD students I’ve taught—your curiosity, feedback, and willingness to try new techniques helped shape the tools and strategies shared in this book.
I’m also incredibly thankful to the past competitors I interviewed, who generously shared their GRC experiences with me. Their insights, energy, and passion brought this project to life. Special thanks to Shannon Brady, Kelly Finke, Iris Garcia-Pak, Ainul Huda, Eliška Jandová, Pewee Datoo Kolubah, Dirk Lauinger, Dylan McClung, Dina Rogers, Princeton Vaughn, and Prescott Vayda.
Finally, I must thank a couple of special people for standing by me—especially during the times when my creative energy ran low. To my friend and favorite science communication partner-in-crime, Amy Aines—thank you for your unwavering belief in me, your wisdom, and your constant encouragement. To my husband Ron, my best friend and partner in life, I am humbled and grateful for your unconditional support and love. When I wanted to give up, you gently reminded me of the investment I had made and how much it good Take First would do for graduate students around the world. Thank you.
